Can a 12 year old swing a drop 5 bat? ›

Players 12 years old and under often use a -8 weight drop, and 13 year old players often use a -5 weight drop. These are recommendations.

Drop 5 bats are lighter and easier to swing, while drop 3 bats offer more power.

The Two Biggest Differences

Drop 5 USSSA Baseball Bats

For young teenagers, typically 12-14 years old, looking down the road to high school baseball tryouts, drop 5 USSSA bats are often the best fit.

If that bat feels like a toothpick and that you could do this drill all day long then the bat might be a little too light. If you are capable of holding the bat in this straight position for ten seconds without straining then the bat is probably the right weight and length.

All (non wood) bats used in NFHS (High School) games are required to be BBCOR certified and NOT have a “drop” (the numerical difference between length (in.) and weight (oz.) of more than -3. Therefore; bats that have a drop greater than -3 (-5; -8; -12 ; etc.)

Drop 8 bats are slightly heavier than drop 10 bats (2 ounces, to be exact), and they provide more power and momentum in the swing. Younger players who are still growing may not be able to handle the weight of a drop 8 bat.

Construction and Performance

Unlike BBCOR bats, USSSA bats are not subjected to the same trampoline effect limitations, giving players a more dynamic hitting experience. The drop weight for USSSA bats varies, and you can find a broader range of drop weights compared to BBCOR bats.

USSSA Baseball Bat Rules & Regulations

The USSSA baseball bat standard has remained unchanged since the 2005 season. Each bat is required to display a 1.15 BPF stamp of approval on the taper between the handle and the barrel.

Effective January 1, 2020, USSSA, a governing body for youth baseball, will adopt a rule requiring that all players 13u players must swing a bat with no lighter than a drop-8 length-to-weight ratio and 14u players must swing a bat no lighter than a drop-5.

The “drop” in this case means the weight of the bat versus the length of the bat. Usually pertaining to the metal bats. A 32 inch bat with a drop -10 would weigh 22 ounces. A 32 inch bat with a drop -5 would weigh 27 ounces.

A bat's drop is the measurement determined by subtracting the weight from length. For example, a 20-ounce bat that is 30 inches long will have a drop of -10. The greater the drop weight (-12 drop is greater than -8 drop), the lighter the bat.
