Homemade Shower Melts Recipe (2024)

Homemade Shower Melts Recipe (1)

This shower melts recipe is very similar to homemade shower soothers. It's a great tried and true recipe to DIY if you are looking for how to use essential oils in the shower.

Now, I know you can buy shower melts but I prefer making my own. For the ingredients that this recipe calls for, you can make several batches for the price of purchasing one package of 6! Not to mention that you know exactly what's going into this recipe. Plus, you can reuse the ingredients and makeadditional batches or other personal care recipes.I'll save on this one thankyouverymuch!

I always have a batch of these shower melts made, especially during the cold and flu season. There are a few different oils I use specifically for congestion, but eucalyptus is my go-to, second is peppermint.

Shower Melts Recipe Directions

  1. Add the cornstarch in a small mixing bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine 1/2 cup water and use the end of a toothpick or lollipop stick to dot the blue food coloring and mix it into the water. Then do the same for the yellow. I like to use a mix of yellow and blue so I can choose my green color and not have to go with a dark green.
  3. Mix in 5-7 drop of your essential oil to your water and stir.
  4. Add in the two tablespoons of water at a time to your cornstarch. Continue to mix to the colors disperse and clumps beginto form. Please note that this amount of water will NOT be enough to make the paste you areafter. It is however a starting point so you can carefully ration water in and form your paste. I used about 1/2 cup exactly.
  5. Continue adding a few drops of water at a time, mixing well as you do. Once you have a thickpaste it will be hard to mix but scoop and transfer the mixture to your square silicone mold. Smooth the mixture out flat using your finger tip.
  6. Freeze the contents for 1 hour or until the mixture is set.

My kids and hubby LOVE these shower melts so be prepared to share. :D They remind me of a sinus bomb especially with the eucalyptus oils, except for you're adding them to the floor of your shower! I much prefer these shower melts over Vicks Vapor rub since the steam from the shower really helps to clear up the congestion coupled with the therapeutic benefits of the essential oils. This is my favorite therapeutic essential oils brand– don't buy the stuff at Walmart or a drugstore because it's not the same.

I also make a version similar to this shower melts recipe, kind of similar to a relaxation bomb.If you use lavender essential oils like in this shower melts recipe, it will help de-stress after a long time. You can stick them in a bath as well they just melt much faster than a homemade bath bomb. I'll make some variations of both for my boys, who are student athletes, to help with muscle soreness and they love them!

A note on the texture the shower steamers should take. If you find that the shower melts mixture is more watery after setting in the freezer, you may need to store in the freezer until use. Be sure to add your water slowly to the mixture when making these to really gauge how watery the texture will be. You want something with a consistency similar to a thick paste.

I have been able to store mine in a large apothecary jar on my counter without them crumbling or melting. However, my bathroom doesn't keep a lot of the steam as some smaller bathrooms may. For example, these probably wouldn't do as well stored in my boys' bathroom since it gets so steamy in there after they shower. I swear it's a cloud of steam for a solid hour afterwards they shower. What is up with that?! I digress. :D

I'm telling you, make a double batch and be prepared to have your kids come looking for them! My hubby and kids do love these. If I'm out or running low, they are the first to tell me about it!
