We all enjoy the open road and feeling the breeze in our hair, but did you know there are legal consequences if caught riding without the proper permit or motorcycle endorsem*nt?
Indiana requires all motorcyclists to have a valid motorcycle learner’s permit or motorcycle endorsem*nt. If caught riding without the proper licensure, you can be fined up to $500.00. Having the proper permit or endorsem*nt isn’t just for legal purposes - it’s a safety hazard for those who do not obtain the proper licensure.
In 2018, 43 percent of the 2,560 motorcycle collisions involved an unendorsed rider. As of the end of April 2019, there have been 300 collisions with 11 fatalities - 18 percent of which involved a rider who did not have the proper motorcycle endorsem*nt or learner’s permit.
Individuals who hold a valid Indiana driver’s license may obtain a motorcycle endorsem*nt in one of two ways. A rider can successfully complete a motorcycle safety course through an authorized RSI provider and upon completion visit their nearest BMV branch to have the endorsem*nt added to their driver’s license. Beginning in March 2019, graduation documents are submitted electronically to the BMV. Motorcyclists also have the option to successfully complete a written knowledge exam at a BMV branch and pass a motorcycle skills exam at an authorized RSI training location to obtain their endorsem*nt.
