Jamaica is a mountainous island, and so its weather varies across the landscape. The Blue Mountains reach over 7500ft, and the northern slopes are typically very wet. Up to 5000mm of rain can fall in a year, bringing lush tropical vegetation. The capitalKingston is located in the sheltered south coast, and typically will see only 750mm of rain per year. Montego Bay, another popular spot, lies on the north coast which sees slightly more rainfall.

When is the best time to go to Jamaica?

Dry season (December to May / winter and spring)

Jamaica's tropical climate brings warmth all year round, but the winter and spring are classed as the dry season. While showers are possible all year round, February is the driest month on average, with about 15mm expected, or roughly 3 rainy days. Sunshine amounts peak through February - April with 9 hours per day.

Wet season (June to November / summer and autumn)

June to November is the wet season and is often characterised by heavy showers and thunderstorms. The Atlantic hurricane season exists between these months, and Jamaica is just as vulnerable as its neighbouring islands. Hurricanes tend to pass near Jamaica every 4-5 years, while a direct hit is less likely, around once in 10 years. Tropical storms that fall below hurricane strength are much more common, and can bring periods of heavy rain, strong winds and flooding to the island. The peak of the wet season is August-October with around 9 rainy days per month and 7 hours of sunshine expected per day.
