Muscle Car Exhaust Sounds: How Make Your Car Sound Huge (2024)

There are several ways in which you might enhance your muscle car exhaust sounds. The exhaust affects performance of the vehicle by disposing of the exhaust from the engine and allowing new, fresh air to come into the engine. When the exhaust does not vent from the vehicle optimally, it essentially chokes the engine, preventing it from functioning at its peak. Modifying the exhaust can increase the vehicle's overall horsepower tremendously, as well as making the vehicle sound like the most powerful, best performing car on the track (or block, depending on the circ*mstances). There are few things more satisfying than a rumbling exhaust on the vehicle, which seems to serve as a reminder of the power that is under the hood. Enhancing the sound of your exhaust gives a different, but equally satisfying, sense that the vehicle you are driving is a force to be reckoned with.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Socket Set
  • Wrench Set
  • Screwdrivers
  • Pliers (various kinds)
  • Crescent Wrenches

Step 1: Replace the Muffler

Factory installed mufflers are designed to absorb as much sound as possible. Most OEM, or factory installed, mufflers are designed so that exhaust has to be routed through several "S" type chambers in the muffler, which absorbs heat and sound. By replacing the muffler with a high performance muffler, you will not only gain the satisfying sound of the engine power, but will likely gain engine power and performance.

Step 2: Add or Replace Exhaust Tip

An exhaust tip is an inexpensive addition that is plug and play. They give new life to narrow, rusty OEM exhaust pipes, and can make a big difference in the look of the exhaust. There are many styles available that simply clamp onto the existing pipe, and can be installed easily. You can have that big sound you are looking for in about five minutes.

Step 3: Have the Exhaust Tubing Evaluated

The tubing that is associated with the exhaust on your vehicle is very similar to a garden hose. If there is a kink in the hose, you lose pressure and power. Exhaust lines have the same principal, and can frequently become "kinked", which creates binds in the flow of the exhaust. This is remedied with what is called a mandrel bender, which is a special type of machine that pulls a ball through the exhaust tubing, smoothing out any "kinks" in the exhaust line. It increases the flow of the exhaust in your system and maximizes fresh air to the engine. Tubing that is too small will restrict the flow. Consider changing out the pipes altogether to encourage air flow and reduce back-pressure in the exhaust system.

Step 4: Consider a Turbocharger

Many manufacturers offer aftermarket turbochargers or super chargers. Not only do these give the sound that many are after, but they will increase the performance by pressurizing the air coming into a cylinder. The more air and fuel, the more power.
