Traffic and sat nav app Waze has introduced smart routing to help drivers avoid London’s Ultra-Low Emission Zone if their vehicles are not compliant.

The app, which is supported by the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and the Ford Sync 3 in-car infotainment system, gets the new functionality ahead of the introduction of the ULEZ next Monday 8th April 2019. Users are now able to indicate whether their vehicle is ULEZ-compliant and receive alerts if their route will be affected by the ULEZ zone, helping them to steer clear of unnecessary fines.
The integration has been implemented through TfL’s long-term data sharing partnership with Waze’s Connected Citizens Program, designed to improve London’s air quality, and will help to reduce emissions in the ULEZ area. It will also enable TfL to measure the impact of the ULEZ scheme based on how many people are rerouting via Waze.

London is now the sixth most congested city in the world and by supporting ULEZ, we’re playing a big part in removing congestion which should ultimately help improve air quality.
“The ULEZ-supported routing will not only help to decrease harmful emissions but also help drivers to avoid unnecessary fines and toll charges. Through Waze, transport authorities are reaching communities like never before – we can’t physically take cars off the roads, but the route to cleaner air could start with one notification at a time.”
