Why You’re Getting Zero Views on Medium (3)

Back in the day, when somebody created a new Medium account, it brought their Twitter followers over to Medium, too. That means some folks started out with a hefty list of followers before they even began writing on Medium.

Of course, those followers didn’t always make a difference. They weren’t all Medium users, and those who were weren’t necessarily active on the platformanyway.

These days, most folks start out at zero on Medium. They typically begin accruing followers whether they’ve published their own stories or not, because other Medium users find them when they browse the platform.

Some users make a habit out of following many other Medium users, but that doesn’t mean they are actually interested in following you.

They might just be hoping that you’ll follow them.

I’ve been on Medium for almost 18 months. The entire time, other people have told me that the follower count is nothing more than a vanity number.

Part of that reasoning seems to come from the facts mentioned above. Also, many users have found that their views, reads, or fans don’t seem to increase exponentially along with their followers.

People mean well when they say that followers don’t matter. But it’s not exactly true.

Followers matter a great deal — likely more than you thought. At the same time, lots of followers don’t do as much for you as you’d think.

And frankly, your number of followers is usually the first reason your stories on Medium get zero views

Shaunta Grimes has been doing a Medium experiment. She’s looking at what it takes to start at zero on Medium these days. She’s pointed out that if your story isn’t curated, Medium doesn’t seem to show your story to readers aside from just some of your followers.

Not all of your followers. Just some. That’s how you can be at 20K followers yet have stories with only 100 or 200 views. Or less.
