How to Get More Followers and Earn $500 Per Month on Medium (2024)

I don’t have the biggest following. My account isn’t the fastest-growing either. My niche is fairly small compared to some of the more-popular ones. But I have managed to grow my following to 7,000 over the past year and some change.

While we can’t reach all our followers with every story, more followers = more writing income (if you’re active on the platform).

Medium rewards us with traffic if we write consistently. This means you’ve got to be here to play. You need to publish on a frequent basis. If you want to grow faster you need to write more.

Even if your story is accepted into one of the big publications, if you don’t have a following, it’s likely you won’t get as much traffic as you could, had you did.

To earn $500 per month on Medium, you need to earn about $16 a day. If you publish daily, this means each story much earn you $16 over the course of the entire month.

This isn’t that hard to do. That’s like 56 cents a day per story.

It gets even easier if you publish more stories per day. If you write two per day, each story only needs to earn a little over twenty-five cents a day.

You don’t have to earn all the money in one day. There’s a cumulative effect. Even for stories that aren’t curated. I haven’t been curated in months. I’m banned. But my stories still earn very well for me, because I continue to promote them — on Medium and off.

Since we get paid for reads, we need readers. If we want readers we need followers.

The old way is to follow-unfollow people. No one likes that. Medium doesn’t. Your new followers won’t. This method works to earn a few folks, but over time it’ll just get you banned or ignored by the algorithm.
